Young Ambassador of the 21st Century

As part of the aims of Lions Clubs International, we endeavour to support those young people who are involved in projects which support the community, be it locally or far and wide.

In this programme, we look toward those who are between the ages 15 to 19 years, and more specifically are playing a leading and guiding roll in the project, and have given some thought to its continuance in the future when they have moved on to pastures new, for example going on to university. The process runs as a form of an annual competition, with bursaries awarded to the district and national winner.

It commences at local Lions club level, where members themselves are on the lookout for such candidates. Perhaps you already know of such an enterprising teenager. We would always be happy to hear about them. In the event of multiple discoveries the local club will then hold a mini-event to determine who would be their best choice to put forward to the district finals.

Naturally, the judging at district level becomes more formal, with a panel of three representing business, education and welfare The candidates make a three minute oral presentation and then respond to judges questions. Perhaps a little scary for some but, rest assured as mums, dads, aunts or uncles are all welcome on the day along with Lions from the sponsoring club. One candidate will then go forward to the national finals.

The nationals are usually held in February on a weekend that coincides with school/college half terms. The district's winner will stay, at no cost to themselves, at the chosen hotel. Saturday is the day of judging, however they will also have the opportunity to enjoy a daytime social event, and a full evening dinner/disco, which is open to travelling companions and supporting Lions. Sunday morning is presentation day, when everyone will have the opportunity to hear each of the finalists presentations, followed then by the Young Ambassador awards ceremony.

The national's winner is then eligible for the European final commonly held in the following September or October.
